I Surrender All

Judson Wheeler Van DeVenter (1855 - 1939)

Van DeVenter was born December 5, 1855 on a farm in Dundee, Michigan. He graduated from Hillsdale College as an Art student, became a teacher and supervisor of Art in one of the public schools. He was an active layman in his church (Methodist Episcopal Church), deeply involved in Evangelical meetings, an accomplished musician, singer and composer. Due to his talent for ministry work, he was encouraged by friends to give up teaching for his Evangelistic meetings. He waited for 5 years before choosing to become either a recognised artist or being devoted to the ministry. He finally surrendered his life to Christian Service during a meeting at Ohio; he travelled round United States, England, France and Scotland to do his Evangelistic work. Towards the end of his life, he moved to Florida and became a professor of Hymnology for 4 years at the Florida Bible Institute. He greatly influenced people like Billy Graham, Oprah Winfrey, Faith Hill, etc. He published over 60 Hymns in his lifetime but "I SURRENDER ALL" stood out. He concentrated on speaking in religious gatherings before he died and he died July 17, 1939.

Winfield S. Weeden's tombstone was inscribed with the title of the hymn - "I Surrender All".

Matthew 19:27 - 30
THE HYMN - "I SURRENDER ALL
Inspiration: "For some time I had struggled between developing my talents in the field of Art and going into Evangelistic work. At last the pivotal hour of my life came, and I surrendered all. A new day was ushered into my life. I became an evangelist and discovered down deep in my soul a talent hitherto unknown to me. God had hidden a song in my heart, and touching a tender chord, He caused me to sing"...Van DeVente

Prayer - Lord, inspire me afresh so I can aspire to the hope of heaven for my life.

1. Surrendering all, is all it takes to express the values of victorious living. It is total surrender to the divine will that enables someone to overcome daily challenges of life. It is all about having power and control over the things of the world through the Holy Spirit of God.

Prayer:
  • Lord, let Your TRUTH break through whatever that is not allowing me to make a definite move in surrendering my all to You. Open my eyes to see that my long awaited victory in my challenges is tied to my decision of laying my all at Your feet. Lordplease help me not to hold back from this truth.
  • Lord, dig out anything that is occupying where You want to fill in my life. Displace anything that is sponsoring evil deposits into my life, and replace it with the benefits of Calvary. Lord, touch a chord in me that will release divine chords of victory in every area of my life, in Jesus' name.
2. Not surrendering all, may hinder all that it takes to receive the New Wine. The Holy Spirit can only be expressed in a life that is not hindered by any worldly form of living.

Prayer:
  • Lord, baptise me afresh with the power of the Holy Spirit. Grant me fresh in-filling and in-dwelling of Your breath of life, and cause me to soar above any form of deadness in all areas. Lord, I empty my life unto You. Please fill me with the treasures of heaven.
  • Lord, help me to bear the image of heaven by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let Your holy flame put out all other flames that cannot be traced to You. Lord, make me one of the  firebrand armies of Your glory and cause me to be on fire for You at all times.

3. Matthew 19:27
"Peter answered Him, we have left everything to follow You! What then will there be for us?" - NIV (New International Version).

"Then Peter said to Him, We've given up everything to follow You. What will we get?" - NLT (New Living Translation).

Prayer:
  •  Lord, help me to live daily in the joy of my full salvation in You. Shift my focus from the GIFT to You, the GIVER; let me not hold on to a particular gift more than necessary. Let me be sensitive and deliberate in opening my hands wide to your divine sustenance. Surround me with those that will support Your purpose for my life.
Lord, help me to surrender all, in order to conquer all in Jesus' name.

I Cannot Tell

I Cannot Tell

I cannot tell why He whom angels worship,
Should set His love upon the sons of men,
Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that He was born of Mary
When Bethlehem’s manger was His only home,
And that He lived at Nazareth and laboured,
And so the Saviour, Saviour of the world is come.

I cannot tell how silently He suffered,
As with His peace He graced this place of tears,
Or how His heart upon the cross was broken,
The crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know, He heals the brokenhearted,
And stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear,
And lifts the burden from the heavy laden,
For yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here.

I cannot tell how He will win the nations,
How He will claim His earthly heritage,
How satisfy the needs and aspirations
Of East and West, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory,
And He shall reap the harvest He has sown,
And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendor
When He the Saviour, Saviour of the world is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship,
When, at His bidding, every storm is stilled,
Or who can say how great the jubilation
When all the hearts of men with love are filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture,
And myriad, myriad human voices sing,
And earth to Heaven, and Heaven to earth, will answer:
At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world is King!
William Y Fullerton

William Young Fullerton (8 March 1857 – 17 August 1932) was a Baptist preacher, administrator and writer. He was born in Belfast, Ireland. As a young man, he was influenced by the preaching of Charles Spurgeon, who became his friend and discipler. Fullerton served as President of the Baptist Union and Home Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society. He was a frequent speaker at Keswick Conventions. His published works include biographies of John Bunyan, Charles Spurgeon, James William Condell Fegan and Frederick Brotherton Meyer; missionary histories and devotional writings. He also compiled several hymnals. He is remembered for his hymn entitled "I Cannot Tell", which he set to the traditional Irish melody "Londonderry". He died at Bedford Park, Middlesex, at the age of 75.

I know that once I was blind, now I see

John 9:6-12,  24-25 "He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."

Numbers 21:6-9 “And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived."

John 3:14-15 "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

I know that sin is destroyed in me

Romans 6:6-14 "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin...  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."

I know Him whom I have believed

2Timothy 1:8-12 "...For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

What do you know?
ü  Thank You for Your revelation to my life. Thank You for helping me to KNOW.
ü  Give me a revelation knowledge of You that is deep seated in my spirit. Not a head knowledge.
ü  Let Your revelations to my life anchor my soul and keep it firm even in the storms of life.
ü  Let one revelation of You move me to another and yet another. Make my life dynamic, not static.

Abide With Me

Listen to this HeartCry message

Join this HeartCry Prayer- Every Wednesday 11.30am-2.30pm (UK time)

1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

3. Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

4. I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

5. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

6. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
Henry F. Lyte

HENRY FRANCIS LYTE – AUTHOR OF ‘ABIDE WITH ME’

A Scottish Anglican Divine and hymn-writer was born on June 1, 1793 and died on Nov 20, 1847 after a long battle with pulmonary diseases (Tuberculosis), aged only 54.

He was the second of three sons born to Thomas and Anna  Lyte. His father, described as a never do well, deserted the family shortly after making arrangements for his two older sons to attend  Portoral Royal School. Anna then moved to London with her youngest son where the both soon died. The headmaster at Portora, Dr Robert Burrowes, recognising Henry’s sterling abilities paid his fees and welcomed him into his own family.

After graduating from Trinity College Dublin, and with very limited training for the ministry (he had wanted to be a doctor), he took the Anglican holy orders in 1815.

A tall and particularly handsome man, slightly eccentric but of great personal charm, noted for his wit and human understanding. A born poet and an able scholar, he spoke Latin, Greek and French Lyte lived a modest, humble life devoted to the study of the Bible. He wrote many poems and hymns, especially from the Psalms. He married Anne Maxwell in 1817, they had two daughters and three sons.

Lyte’s first work was Tales in Verse illustrative of several of the petitions in the Lord’s prayer (1826)
In 1833 – A collection of poems and hymns he titled ‘The Spirit of the Psalms’ He is credited with about 89 hymns, the best known of which are: 'Praise my Soul the King of Heaven' and 'Abide With me Fast Fall the Eventide'.

---------------------------------------------------------------

ABIDE WITH ME FAST FALLS THE EVENTIDE

Lyte wrote this hymn and preached on it two months before his death. Orphaned at a young age, coupled with his long battle with ill health, Lyte was gravely discouraged when numbers of his congregation (including in 1846, nearly his entire choir) left him for Dissenter congregations, so he wrote the lyrics to this hymn in September 1846 and died two months later.

It is the most published hymn of all time. The inspiration for the hymn came to Lyte from Luke 24:29. “But they urged and insisted, saying to Him, Remain with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. So He went in to stay with them.” AMP.

PRAYERS

Mal. 3: 3-4, 2 Cor. 12: 6-10

  • Lord, as You found in Henry LYTE a yielded vessel, in spite of his challenges, I have no excuse for withholding myself from You.
  • Let those challenges be a catalyst to advance Your work in me and through me – Phil 1:12.
  • Give me grace in my weaknesses so that Your power may rest upon and be made manifest in and through me.

O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go

Join this HeartCry Prayer- Every Wednesday 11.30am-2.30pm (UK time)

O love that wilt not let me go
The story behind the hymn
O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Jesus only is our message,
Jesus all our theme shall be;
We will lift up Jesus ever,
Jesus only will we see.

Jesus only, Jesus ever,
Jesus all in all we sing,
Saviour, Sanctifier, and Healer,
Glorious Lord and coming King.

Jesus only is our Saviour,
All our guilt He bore away,
All our righteousness He gives us,
All our strength from day to day.

Jesus is our Sanctifier,
Cleansing us from self and sin,
And with all His Spirit’s fullness,
Filling all our hearts within.

Jesus only is our Healer,
All our sicknesses He bare,
And His risen life and fullness,
All His members still may share.

Jesus only is our Power,
He the Gift of Pentecost,
Jesus, breathe Thy pow’r upon us,
Fill us with the Holy Ghost.

And for Jesus we are waiting,
List’ning for the advent call;
But ’twill still be Jesus only,
Jesus ever, all in all.
